FAQ’s
Q: Can I be interested in more than one sub-team?
A: Yes! You absolutely can be! We have members on several, myself included! Once you end up in leadership it may be difficult to juggle too many responsibilities but we absolutely encourage trying out multiple. I particularly encourage engineers to take a look at our operations team - you'd be surprised how fantastic learning logistics can be for your technical skills!
Q: How do I become a driver?
A: If you are interested in traveling for one of our yearly Races, you can apply to be a driver! In the meantime we will have test driving on our car and those that are interested may get a chance! I can't promise it's quite like a sports car... but it is very fun!
Q: Are grad students welcome?
A: Yes! We encourage all students to join!
Q: What is the onboarding process like?
A: This year we are trying a bit more structured of an approach! We hope to have all interested members be able to attend either of the orientation sessions. After that, you will join our discord via an invite link. Once you are on, there will be a few surveys and exercises to complete to be added to the rest of our softwares. From there, you will begin attending subteam meetings as well as subsystems where you will be assigned New Member Tasks to get you used to a practical skill or application the team uses. After that, you're in! It may sound long but this will help you get used to our faces, our procedures, and make it so much easier to start working on the car!
Q: Can I put this on my resume as an engineering project?
A: Absolutely.
Q: Is the ops team broken down into systems?
A: Yes! The ops team has different subsystems like any other, although right now they are really looking for people to join to make them larger!
Q: How do I know when and where to be?
A: Our discord will have all the information you need. Until then, come to an orientation!
Q: How much of a time commitment is this?
A: It truly is however much you want. I encourage you to expect around 3 hours a week early on but some members only attend one meeting a weke at first, some are already here 20 hours! The time and work you put in will reflect the value you get out but we never want people to shy away from interest just because of the commitment.
Q: When are meetings?
A: They are scattered throughout the week but almost all are later in the day (around 6pm) on Monday-Thursdays. Note that systems meet separately on top of subteams, so there is almost guaranteed a meeting you are interested in that you will be free to attend. This will all be communicated a bit later on. If you are unable to make a meeting you really want to attend, you can always reach out to that lead!
Q: Can I learn as I go/do I have to have an applicable major?
A: We will teach you everything you need to know! We are really working to make this semester, as well as future semesters, an easy to join club. We are building out tutorials, specific tasks, and more for you all to feel welcome and encouraged to join and learn.
Q: How do I know which subteam to join?
A: Attend one of our info sessions and you will be able to talk to each team's lead as well as members to discuss what the work is like. During orientation you will be added to the discord as a "New Member" with access to every subteam's announcements. You won't be limited!
