Aurora II, the University's entry in Sunrayce '95, used the top performance in Tuesday's third leg to climb to second place with only two days remaining.

The solar-car race, a competition of the nation's top-40 technical institutions, began in Indianapolis on June 20 and ends Thursday in Golden, Colo.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology has about a 40 minute lead on Minnesota, which is 31 minutes ahead of third-place George Washington.

Aurora II is on the brink of shattering its predecessor's success from Sunrayce '93. Aurora I placed 21st out of 35 teams that year. Minnesota has been in the top five since the beginning of this year's race.

Tuesday's 150-mile route included a 1,500-foot climb from Smith Center, Kan., to St. Francis, Kan. Wednesday's race route will include an ascent of 2,000 feet and conclude in Aurora, Colo.
